A recent study reveals that people who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a leading medical journal shows that while overweight individuals can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users purchasing these medications should be cognizant of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery suggests a return to original mass within about one and a half years.
Comparing Approaches
The study, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Researchers note that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically experience a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Fast Rebound
Doctors suggest the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this medication leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."
A Chronic Disease?
Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts argue that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be ongoing.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have come off the medication describe a sudden return of appetite.
"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," described an individual.
The struggle is compounded if patients have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.
- Adoption is more common among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts stress that while these medications are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success likely depends on integrated behavioural changes.
